A Month Into Tour 2023 ‘Surf Bungaku Kamakura’

A month ago, on 22 September, a Japan-wide Asian Kung-Fu Generation tour dedicated to the release of ‘Surf Bungaku Kamakura (Complete Version)’ started. Let’s dive into this part of the tour.

Three concerts postponed

The original schedule is the following:

29 Sep – Fukuoka (Zepp Fukuoka)
1 Oct – Tokyo (Zepp Haneda)
4 Oct – Osaka (BIG CAT)
5 Oct – Osaka (Namba Hatch)
8 Oct – Miyagi (Sendai GIGS)
15 Oct – Hokkaido (Factory Hall)

18 Oct – Aichi (Zepp Nagoya)
21 Oct – Hiroshima (Hiroshima CLUB QUATTRO)
22 Oct – Hiroshima (Hiroshima CLUB QUATTRO)

2 Nov – Tokyo (Nippon Seinen-kan Hall)
3 Nov – Tokyo (Nippon Seinen-kan Hall)
19 Nov – Tokyo (TACHIKAWA STAGE GARDEN)
22 Nov – Kanagawa (Kamakura Performing Arts Centre)
23 Nov – Kanagawa (Kamakura Performing Arts Centre)

The struck-through dates are the past ones already (we shall return to them later). But, as you can see, there are three concerts in italics, what’s the deal with these? These three – in Aichi and Hiroshima – have been postponed for later dates due to Masafumi Gotoh’s health condition.

On 18 October, during the concert in Nagoya, a statement was released on the band’s Twitter page that the concert was being stopped and postponed to a later – not decided yet – date. The reason for that was a worsened Gotch’s throat condition.

The next day, a similar announcement regarding the next two gigs in Hiroshima was made. Those two lives were postponed too.

In his diary, Gotch wrote that his throat condition worsened on the 17th while they still were in Hokkaido after the concert on the 15th. In the entry for the 18th, he wrote that they were forced to stop the Nagoya performance due to this. On the 19th, he visited a doctor who told him that he could perform on the 22nd, but not on the 21st, so the band had to postpone both Hiroshima gigs. Later in the days of the last week, Gotch was going through the treatment.

On 24 October, the band’s management announced the new dates for those three concerts. Asian Kung-Fu Generation will play in Nagoya on 14 December and in Hiroshima on the 20th and the 21st.
