Hello, you may know that there will be a sequel to Ajikan’s 2008 album ‘Surf Bungaku Kamakura’. I have collected all the available info, that we know until this point.
Gotch has mentioned several times in the past that he wants to complete Surf Bungaku Kamakura. In 2021, he wrote on Twitter that they plan to do a sequel. Furthermore, he revealed too, that ‘Kouya wo Aruke’ was held back for a potential Surf Bungaku Kamakura sequel, so it would have been ‘Ano ko ga Saafuboodo (Surfboard) kette’ instead of skateboard! (Tweet) . In June 2021, he mentioned that he wants to release it in the summer of 2022 (Tweet). He already wrote all the songs (Tweet) in the autumn of 2021. In more detail, It will go in a power-pop direction. He mentioned in a blog post too, that the sequel will have 5 songs with stations (Ishigami, Yanagikouji, Shonan Kaigan Koen, Kamakura Kokomae and Wadazuka) and one ‘instrumental cover’, not clear what exactly is meant by ‘instrumental cover’ (Blog post from October ’21). However, in an interview for Planet Folks, it seems the sequel was pushed back to fall (Barks interview), there are also thoughts about doing a double EP instead of a 6 songs EP with the old Surf songs or pushing it back to re-record the old songs. So currently, we don’t know how the EP will be released.
What do we know about the songs? The song for Wadazuka will be ‘Wadazuka Wonders’. Gotch played the song live last year on an acoustic guitar, so I assume it’s a calmer song (Gotch Insta). Two other songs could be ‘Nissaka Town Hill’ which seems to replace Kamakura Kokomae, Kiyoshi seems to be credited for one song (both seen in an Insta story). Another song could be Seihou Coast Story (Chako no Shonan Kaigan Koen Monogatari) The song is a homage to Southern All Stars’ ‘Chako no Kaigan Monogatari’ (YouTube). The lyrics mentioned like Gotch’s song /Chako (The nickname of the singer Hisahiko Iida), Miiko (singer Miiko Hirota) and / Peanuts (The Peanuts was a music group consisting of two twin sisters). The Eboushiwa (a rock, the symbol of the town Chigasaki) is appearing in both lyrics too.
There are several clips of Ajikan doing recording/pre-production at 107st, Landmark Studio etc (Gotch Insta), they do recordings since March. They recorded one song of the sequel last year, it’s maybe the 170 bpm song that Gotch mentioned. I hope soon it’s clear what will happen with the Surf Bungaku Kamakura sequel, are you excited?! Please let me know!
